The Animal Inside of You

Animal Farm Soundtrack: "The Animal Inside of You"

I chose this for my album cover because I think it is a good representation of Animal Farm as well as the songs I chose.  Many of them deal with man's inner animal and how there is a very fine line between the two.  Man can also be represented in three main groups: pigs, dogs, and sheep, as shown in Pink Floyd's album "Animals".  I also chose this image because you see a very humanized pig.  He is standing on two legs and wearing clothes, both against the Animal Farm comandments.  In this image, the pig also has hands, used for possibly holding whips like at the end of novel.  His expression also gives away his evil manner and makes it easy to picture him as Napoleon.  I also think it is interesting that he has overly large ears.  It makes me think of the big bad wolf in Little Red Riding Hood.  "The better to hear you with, my dear."  Maybe that is how he hears everything-like the animals confessions and their guilt, which also fits with Big Brother in George Orwell's 1984.

Track 1: Animal In Man

http://youtu.be/ubMQkPzc0Fs

Dead Prez
With the original 1954 Animal Farm cartoon
And I couldn't find a clean version...

Lyrics:
Help me!
You want me to help you?
Man is evil, capable of nothing but destruction

Once upon a time
There was a very serious situation growing
There was a farmer and a farmyard filled with animals
And this is the story of their times

Old man sammy had a farm
Walked the land with the wife
Most of the time shit was calm
His whole life was maintained off the everyday labor
From the mules in the field to the cattle in the stable
This is how we kept food on this table (maxing)
You would have thought he was disabled by the way he be relaxing
Acting like mr. magnificent
But the animals were thinking something different
The sentiment was tension in the barnyard
Throughout the years they had been through mad drama
With the farmer, word is bond
And they all came to one conclusion
They argued there was no way they'd ever be free
If it was up to humans
Therefore the only course left was revolution which was understandable
And since the pigs promised to lead in the interest of all the animals
They planned a full attack
Under the leadership of hannibal
The fattest pig in the pack
The next morning on the farm
Everything was calm
Just before dawn
But before long
The sun got so hot it made the farm seem electric
Now check it
This is when that shit got hectic
Directed by hannibal, the animals attacked
Old sam was in a state of shock
And fell up on his back
And dropped his rifle
Reaching in vain
Each and every creature from the field at his throat
Screaming "kill, feel the pain."

Chorus
This is the animal in man
This is the animal in you
This is the animal in man
Coming true (2x)

After they ran the farmer off the farm
The pigs went around and called a meeting in the barn
Hannibal spoke for several hours
But when talks about his plans for power
That's when the conversation turned sour
He issued an offical ordinance to set
If not a pig from this day forth then you insubordinate
That's when the horses went buckwild
One of them shouted out
"you fraudulent pigs, we know your fucking style!"
Hannibal's face was flushed and pale
All the animals eyes full of disgust and betrayal
He felt the same way sam felt
They took his tongue out of his mouth
And cut his body up for sale, for real
You better listen while you can
Its a very thin line between animal and man
When hannibal crossed the line they all took a stand
What would have done?
Shook his hand?
This is the animal in man

Chorus (4x)

Remember...

I chose this song as the first one on my soundtrack because it is a great summary of Animal Farm (plus a rap about Animal Farm with a cartoon made me laugh a little bit).  This is the only song I found that mentions Mrs. Jones as well, as they walk around their farm which is kind of interesting because I doubt the tsar of Russia did everything on his own.  "You would have thought he was disabled by the way he be relaxing" is also straight from Animal Farm.  Mr. Jones's alcohol problem did not help the situation with the animals, it also makes me wonder what the tsar of Russia was doing when he was neglecting his people.  "And since the pigs promised to lead in the interest of all the animals/They planned a full attack" sums up the whole problem.  The pigs broke their promise and the other animals were left with nothing.  Also, the animals attack and Sam loses his rifle, just like the battle in the book.  However, you see the animals turn into violent people at the end of that verse, making them no better than the people they were fighting.  That point is very interesting because I don't think we ever looked at it like that.  "There is a very thin line between animal and man" is another great summary because the pigs basically turned into people by the end of Animal Farm.

Track 2: Sheep

http://youtu.be/tcRYdVlGXNQ

Pink Floyd
From the album Animals, which has catagorizes man as Pigs, Dogs, or Sheep.

Lyrics:
Harmlessly passing your time in the grassland away
Only dimly aware of a certain unease in the air
You better watch out
There may be dogs about
I've looked over Jordan and I have seen
Things are not what they seem.

What do you get for pretending the danger's not real
Meek and obedient you follow the leader
Down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel
What a surprise!
A look of terminal shock in your eyes
Now things are really what they seem
No, this is no bad dream.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He makes me down to lie
Through pastures green he leadeth me the silent waters by
With bright knives he releaseth my soul
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places
He converteth me to lamb cutlets
For lo,m he hath great power and great hunger
When cometh the day we lowly ones
Through quiet reflection and great dedication
Master the art of karate
Lo, we shall rise up
And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water.

Bleating and babbling we fell on his neck with a scream
Wave upon wave of demented avengers
March cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream.

Have you heard the news?
The dogs are dead!
You better stay home
And do as you're told
Get out of the road if you want to grow old.

I chose this song for this soundtrack because it is an excellent representation of the common people and the animals on Animal Farm.  Pink Floyd's album, Animals, was inspired by George Orwell's Animal Farm and categorizes people as pigs, dogs, or sheep.  "Only dimly aware of a certain unease in the air" represents the majority of the animals on Animal Farm, not just the sheep.  "You better watch out/There may be dogs about" is a perfect example of what happened in Animal Farm.  The animals had to be careful not to show their discontent because the dogs would surely turn them into Napoleon and the fear of executions hung over their heads.  These lines also fit well with 1984 and the idea that Big Brother is always watching.  The lines "Meek and obedient you follow the leader/Down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel" are quite terrifying.  I think they are a good representation of when the animals admitted their crimes and were slaughtered.  Finally in the end of the song, the sheep gain the courage to take action against the dogs.

Track 3: Poverty For All

http://youtu.be/urdRCiBkgSU

Ignite

Lyrics:
Sold by your own
October revolution
Out to the streets
To fight against the tyranny
In 56' we fought the occupation
The young and old
Against the Communist regime

The sorrow, a so-called liberation
The sorrow, a violent domination
Sorrow, the humiliation
Fifty years, the death of a nation

Poverty for all
But freedom's the exception
The Proletariat, now the
Red Bourgeoisie
The murder, the torture
The terror, the famine
Fifty years under the
Communist regimes

The sorrow, a so-called liberation
The sorrow, a violent domination
Sorrow, the humiliation
Fifty years, the death of a nation

The price of freedom,
is worth it to me
Fighting
A revolution
Fighting
For human rights
The Cheka, the Stazi
The human tragedies
The casualties of the state
Fifty years,
a tragic philosophy
Fifty years,
collective suffering
Fifty years,
we're the casualties
of the state

The sorrow, a so-called liberation
The sorrow, a violent domination
Sorrow, the humiliation
Fifty years, the death of a nation

I chose this song for my Animal Farm soundtrack because it is a picture of what Communism has done to the people.  "Sold by your own October revolution" fits well with Animal Farm because their revolution put them into a worse place than before when Mr. Jones ran the farm.  "Poverty for all/But freedom's the exception" paints an interesting picture.  The animals are poorer than before the revolution; they must work longer hours for less food.  However, they are enjoying 'freedom', or are they?  Again, "The murder, the torture/The terror, the famine" fit well with Animal Farm.  The animals do undergo all of these things (except perhaps torture, which did happen in Communist Russia).  You also see "sorrow" and "death of a nation" repeated in this song.  The devastation brought to Animal Farm and Russia are evident.  Finally, "we're casualties of the state" really drives the point home.  The animals as well as the people were just used by the tyrants.

Track 4: Cows With Guns

http://youtu.be/FQMbXvn2RNI

Dana Lyons

Lyrics:
Fat and docile, big and dumb
They look so stupid, they aren't much fun
Cows aren't fun

They eat to grow, they grow to die
They die to be eaten at the hamburger fry
Cows well done

Nobody thunk it, nobody knew
No one imagined the great cow guru
Cows are one

He hid in the forest, read books with great zeal
He loved Che Guevera, a revolutionary veal
Cow Tse Tongue

He spoke about justice, but nobody stirred
He felt like an outcast, alone, in the herd.
Cow doldrums

He mooed we must fight, escape or we'll die
Cows gathered around, cause the stakes were so high
Bad cow pun

But then he was captured, stuffed into a crate
Loaded onto a truck, where he rode to his fate
Cows are bummed

He was a scrawny calf, who looked rather woozy
No one suspected he was packing an Uzi
Cows with guns

They came with a needle to stick in his thigh
He kicked for the groin, he pissed in their eye
Cow well hung

Knocked over a tractor and ran for the door
Six gallons of gas flowed out on the floor
Run cows run!

He picked up a bullhorn and jumped up on the hay
We are free roving bovines, we run free today
We will fight for bovine freedom
And hold our large heads high
We will run free with the Buffalo, or die...
Cows with guns

They crashed the gate in a great stampede
Tipped over a milk truck, torched all the feed
Cows have fun

Sixty police cars were piled in a heap
Covered in cow pies, covered up deep
Much cow dumg

Black smoke rising, darkening the day
Twelve burning McDonald's, have it your way

We will fight for bovine freedom
And hold our large heads high
We will run free with the buffalo, or die
Cows with guns

The President said "Enough is Enough!
These uppity cattle, it's time to get tough"
Cow dung flung

The newspapers gloated, folks sighed with relief
Tomorrow at noon, they would all be ground beef
Cows on buns

The cows were surrounded, they waited and prayed
They mooed their last moos,
They chewed their last hay
Cows out-gunned

The order was given, turn cows to Whoppers
Enforced by the might of ten thousand coppers
But on the horizon, surrounding the shoppers
Came the deafening roar, of chickens, in choppers!

We will fight for bovine freedom
And hold our large heads high
We will run free with the buffalo, or die
Cows with guns

I chose this song for my Animal Farm Soundtrack because it does a great job of illustrating the animals on Animal Farm as well as the Russian people.  I think the opening lines really set the tone for what happened.  "Fat and docile, big and dumb" paint the people as well as the animals under the pigs as sheep (not necessarily cows) that will follow anyone and anything.  "The great cow guru" could easily be a combination of Old Major, Snowball, and Napoleon.  I think the line "we will run free with the buffalo, or die" shows the desparation of the people.  In the animated video, there is a scene where the cow is loaded onto a truck, making me think of when Boxer was loaded into the meat wagon and taken to his death.

Track 5: The Internationale

http://youtu.be/5DTbashsKic

This is the British version of "The Internationale" sung by Alistair Hulett.

Lyrics:
Arise, ye workers from your slumber,
Arise, ye prisoners of want.
For reason in revolt now thunders,
and at last ends the age of cant!
Away with all your superstitions,
Servile masses, arise, arise!
We'll change henceforth the old tradition,
And spurn the dust to win the prize!
So comrades, come rally,
And the last fight let us face.
The Internationale,
Unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally,
And the last fight let us face.
The Internationale,
Unites the human race.

No more deluded by reaction,
On tyrants only we'll make war!
The soldiers too will take strike action,
They'll break ranks and fight no more!
And if those cannibals keep trying,
To sacrifice us to their pride,
They soon shall hear the bullets flying,
We'll shoot the generals on our own side.
So comrades, come rally,
And the last fight let us face.
The Internationale,
Unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally,
And the last fight let us face.
The Internationale,
Unites the human race.

No saviour from on high delivers,
No faith have we in prince or peer.
Our own right hand the chains must shiver,
Chains of hatred, greed and fear.
E'er the thieves will out with their booty,
And to all give a happier lot.
Each at his forge must do their duty,
And we'll strike the iron while it's hot.
So comrades, come rally,
And the last fight let us face.
The Internationale,
Unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally,
And the last fight let us face.
The Internationale,
Unites the human race.

I chose this song for my soundtrack because it is an excellent representation of Russian Communism and Animal Farm.  It is also the song that inspried Animal Farm's "Beasts of England".  I think many of the lines fit very well with the novel.  "On tyrants we'll make war" is clearly fits with events in Russia as well as the expulsion of Mr. Jones.  "And the last fight let us face" also suggests how Communist ideals were supposed to be a cure-all for Russia and Manor Farm.  They may have actually worked, as Communist ideals are not bad things, but the corruption of Stalin and the pigs ruined all chance of the revolution actually being the last fight.  With this song, it is easy to see why "Beasts of England" was outlawed after the revolution.  "The Internationale" is a very rebellious song and the Communists would not have wanted the people singing it.

1984: A Summary

Winston Smith is trapped in the dysfunctional utopian society of Oceania.  He is unhappy with the Party’s oppression and the way it limits the expression of the individual.  Every day, Winston witnesses the Party’s lies; his job at the Ministry of Truth is to alter history so that it fits perfectly with everything the government says.  He illegally buys a journal in which to write his rebellious and criminal thoughts.  He fixates on a Party member named O’Brien, who he believes to be a member of the Brotherhood, and becomes Winston’s personal Big Brother.  Winston becomes infatuated with a beautiful girl named Julia but he fears that she is a spy for Big Brother, for even children spy for Big Brother.  Julia then slips Winston a note saying “I love you” and they begin their illegal affair.  The affair continues in a rented room about the bookshop where Winston bought the diary and his feelings toward the Party grow more bitter.  He finally receives a message that O’Brien wants to see him.  Winston and Julia go to O’Brien’s apartment where he confesses that he is a member of the Brotherhood.  He makes Winston and Julia members as well and gives them a book to read.  Soldiers then burst into the room above the store because the store owner has been a member of the Thought Police all along.  They are then taken to the Ministry of Love.  It is revealed that O’Brien is just a Party spy and not one of the Brotherhood.  He spends months torturing Winston and finally takes him to Room 101 where he has to confront his worst fear.  O’Brien straps a rat cage to Winston’s head and Winston finally gives in.  He begs O’Brien to do it to Julia instead.  That separation was what O’Brien wanted so Winston was released.  He then found himself brainwashed and without any feelings for Julia.
